Fructose Consumption not as Safe as You Think

Though the latest trends in weight loss have been riding the low-carbohydrate wave for years, a study published by the University of Florida says that cutting starchy foods out of your diet may not be as important as limiting the amount of sugar you eat, mainly fructose.  This comes as a surprise as fructose is a sugar that naturally occurs in fruit, and many say it is the best to consume because the body takes longer to break it down than refined sugars.

While the study is mainly concerned with fructose found in table sugar and refined foods, this may come to a shock to those who praise fruit-juice based detox diets to aid in quick weight loss.  According to the study, fructose spikes uric acid levels, which leads to insulin resistance and other metabolic problems.  Researchers are especially concerned with those with existing metabolic conditions who are trying to lose weight through fad diets that emphasize eliminating foods like pastas and bread.

This is not meant to scare people away from eating fruit altogether.  The largest concern is still processed foods and soft drinks, which contain the most fructose.  Almost all processed foods contain a high-fructose corn syrup, a sugar substitute.  Researchers have been able to make a correlation between the amount of sugar consumed and the rise in numbers of Americans who are obese or have some insulin or metabolic related disease.  They state this problem began back in the 1800s and has been on the rise ever since.

One of the largest breakthroughs is the discovery that it doesn’t matter what kind of sucrose it is.  Whether you eat the naturally occurring version from fruits or the refined sugar in processed foods, too much sucrose can be dangerous.  While eating one piece of fruit is okay, eating five apples at a time would pose the same risk as someone who drinks soda.  An alternative to going overboard on fruit is to try calorie reduction with supplements.  One of the most popular, hoodia, is available in a fast acting version.  This hoodia shot can be taken minutes before cravings usually hit to aid in avoiding temptation at your most vulnerable times.
