The punch line should be and you will be as big as a house in no time. The reality is that it is possible to eat whatever you want.

Really.

But unless you are willing to do what Michael Phelps does or something close to it you may not be able to eat exactly like him or quite as much as him.

During a recent interview Michael eluded to a diet for a typical training day that consisted of something like this:

Breakfast: Three fried egg sandwiches made with cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, fried onions, and mayonnaise; three chocolate-chip pancakes; five-egg omelet; three sugar-coated slices of French toast; bowl of grits; two cups of coffee

Lunch: One pound of enriched pasta; two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayonnaise on white bread; energy drinks

Dinner: One pound of pasta with carbonara sauce; a large pizza; energy drinks

I don’t know about you, but I believe that diet would take me all day just to eat, let alone training for 5 hours and then getting my daily activities and chores in as well. It seems unlikely that anyone other than a professional athlete would ever have a need to eat this much food in a single day. But it did make me think about my philosophies on nutrition and eating.

As a trainer, I tell all my clients that my goal is for them to be able to eat whatever they want, whenever they want, as long as they don’t do it all the time and they do try and make an attempt at a reasonable portion.

If a person trains for 45 minutes, at a high level of intensity every day, increases the lean muscle mass of the body, lowers overall body fat to single digits for men and low teens for women, then in my book, that person should be able to eat whatever they want.

They are fat burning machines and every single thing that goes into the body is being used as energy. There is no way for the body to store fat because the metabolic rate is so high on that individual that the body has already used up all the fat stores to just accomplish the daily activities.

The problem with this scenario is most people don’t train hard enough, long enough and often enough to ever achieve this goal.

However, if you can do all of the above and stay there for just 60 days, then I am confident you can start to nibble on everything in site. I say nibble because you should never over indulge. It just isn’t healthy. Eating a 2 lb bag of M & M’s in one sitting is never a good idea, even if you are Michael Phelps. But you certainly could get a “normal” size bag and enjoy.

For now, imagine this. You have worked so hard, eaten so clean for 3-4 months, lowered your body fat to really impressive numbers, and have made your body a fat burning furnace so much that you need to go to the ice cream store every night for a double scoop of whatever you want.

Great, right?

Well that is exactly where I have taken some of my clients. They are able to live that way and if they don’t eat 5-6 times a day they can’t keep the weight on. That would be a great problem to have … Wouldn’t it?

And you just better pray you’re not anywhere near me if I’ve had more than a couple nights of less than restful sleep.

In other words, the whole system fails.  I simply can’t stay healthy when I’m stressed and I KNOW I’m not the only one.

How to Manage Your Stress

It’s not meditating.

It’s not taking a nap or drinking chamomile tea.

Just like ingesting an Ibuprofen to alleviate your headache, these tactics only help to alleviate the symptoms. They don’t come anywhere close to the cause.

To do that, you have to get to the root of your problem and figure out what’s contributing to your stress in the first place.

For me, this means tackling the workaholic and perfectionist in me who says, “If I’m not constantly working, then I’m not working hard enough, and if my work isn’t “perfect,” then I’m not working hard enough!” and has me setting ridiculous daily goals for myself that I can’t possibly meet while at the same time reducing my leisure activities to almost nil.

Before I know it, I’m overworking, undereating, and having mad cravings for all kinds of cooked food comforts.

So what do I do to combat this?  I set reasonable goals, plan out my work periods for the day, make sure to leave ample relaxation time and VOILA!  I’m more productive, more relaxed, and stress-free!

In other words, I DO SOMETHING about it! I don’t just read lots of stress management articles (like this one).  I don’t just sit down to a self-help book.  I apply that information to my own life and put it to work as soon as possible.

It’s just like with going raw.

You can read all the raw food literature you want or watch as many raw recipe videos on YouTube as humanly possible.  It won’t mean diddly squat if the only raw food you eat is an ounce of lettuce under a mountain of Ranch dressing or a sprig of parsley with your Chicken Carbonara.

You have to actually EAT RAW FOODS to experience the benefits!

Putting It All Together

So if you want to stay raw, maintain an effective exercise program, and obtain overall health, you’ve got to get your stress under control. To do that, you have to figure out what causes your stress, develop techniques for managing it, and then get to work!

Up next, Philadelphia’s own Eric Carbonara has been winning rave reviews for his solo acoustic guitar music as heard on Exodus Bulldornadius (Locust Music). Carbonara’s playing draws on the rich musical styles from Andalusian Roma-Flamenco to Hindustani & North African folk to form a kind of exalted pidgin style of playing that covers a wide emotional terrain from meditative calm to restless unease.

George Korein has developed a reputation in the Philadelphia musical underground for being a true musical iconoclast. Moving from no-wave moods to textured noise works to improvisation and catchy pop moments (sometimes in the course of the same song), we can’t guarantee that George’s set will resemble at all the sounds to be found on Another Corpse, which is the debut release on Majmua Music.

Hailing from Montreal, Dora Bleu is the latest group led by Dorothy Geller, previously of From Quagmire (VHF Records) and Laconic Chamber (Camera Obscura). Her music can be considered “of folk” while not referencing traditional folk forms, anchored by a very explicative voice and guitar playing with an accompaniment that is alternatively unified song form or seemingly improvised depending on what is required in the moment.

Alan Sondheim is perhaps best known in musical circles for his pair of recordings on the legendary ESP Disk label, but his first recording, The Songs was released on Riverboat Records in 1967 (and has been reissued on Fire Museum Records). The multi instrumentalist returned with his first proper release of new recordings in almost 20 years with the release of Skin/n in 2006 on Fire Museum Records. Appearing in Philadelphia for the first time, this year will also see the release of “Boojum”, a recording of experimental lounge music.
